Are films losing their edge

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Movie industry groups, such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Film Institute are trying to develop tactics that will convince people that movies still matter in Los Angeles after sales in movie ticket sales dropped this past year.

Purchases were  the lowest since the mid 90’s after a drop at 1.28 billion in the box office. Now the industry is concerned that moviegoers’ interest has shifted more towards television.

George Stevens Jr., the founder of the American Film Institute thinks that the trend of viewing video  on smartphones and tablets is also playing a part in decrease. “I think they will find their way, but it’s a time of enormous change,” Stevens said.

With the Academy Award season underway, the Academy has chosen Seth MacFarlane, known for his writing and producing of shows like Family Guy, to host the Oscars, in order to generate more buzz.

Independent filmmaker, Troy Harris II, said that people could blame it on online video streaming because that form of technology makes us lazy. “I think our attention span is shorting as a society, but I think movies will always be relevant,” Harris said. “The problem is the movie tickets and its competition being a cheaper route.”

But the way films were a part of the American culture is slowly becoming a thing of the past.  Now films that are popular tend to lack depth.

Audiences are now finding more interest in popular television shows and options like Red Box, Hulu and Netflix.

Film enthusiast also looked into getting Oscar-winning filmmakers together for a promotional campaign and are building a movie museum in Los Angeles to get the public more interested in the films the Academy makes.
